Opening Doors for Change

IofC Philippines Signs Its First MoU with MSU-IIT

In early 2024, a local friend’s request to reach out to the Philippines was shared. What began as a simple thought has gradually grown into an annual outreach programme, expanding in both scope and reach. Now in its third year, the initiative continues to open doors to new relationships, shared learning, and meaningful collaboration with university students.

This October, the journey brought the IofC Philippines team, together with the outreach team in the Philippines for a 20-day outreach programme. Through visits to universities and engagement with students, the team had opportunities to exchange experiences, listen to different perspectives, and explore shared aspirations for personal growth and social transformation. Among these encounters, one milestone stood out: the signing of IofC Philippines’ first Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with a university in the country.

A Historic Milestone: Opening the Door Through an MoU

On 23 October 2026, Initiatives of Change (IofC) Philippines marked a significant milestone by signing its first-ever Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) in the Philippines with Mindanao State University – Iligan Institute of Technology (MSU-IIT).

Beyond formalising a partnership, the MoU offers an opportunity for MSU-IIT and IofC Philippines to reflect on how education can nurture not only knowledge, but also character, compassion, and a sense of responsibility. Through shared learning, reflection, and action, MSU-IIT and IofC Philippines hope to encourage students and, where appropriate, faculty members to deepen their self-awareness, lead with integrity, and contribute to a culture of peace and understanding. It is a shared commitment to the belief that meaningful change begins within each individual and grows through the choices we make and the way we relate to others. While the signing marks a new chapter in the relationship between the MSU-IIT and IofC Philippines, its roots go back to an initiative that began with a shared commitment to positive change.

From Project Peer to a Shared Vision

From a student initiative to a growing partnership for personal transformation, ethical leadership, and a culture of peace.

The foundations of this partnership were laid in 2024, when the MSU-IIT Psychology Society SEC initiated Project Peer. What began as a small initiative has continued to grow, demonstrating how meaningful change can emerge from a simple idea and take shape through relationships, commitment, and a shared sense of purpose.

Beyond the workshops and discussions, Project Peer created a space for young people to reflect on themselves, deepen their understanding of others, and consider how their choices and actions affect the people around them. These experiences offered an opportunity to look beyond leadership as a position or responsibility and to recognise the importance of character, empathy, and self-awareness. This journey also reflects a central principle of IofC: lasting change in our communities begins with a willingness to look within and take responsibility for the change we wish to see in the world.

The signing of the MoU builds on this experience, providing a framework for continued collaboration and opening possibilities to bring these conversations and practices to more students and members of the university community. The MoU is also a recognition of the relationships, trust, and shared learning that have developed along the way.

Growing Through Friendship and Collaboration

The growth of this partnership has also been made possible through the wider IofC network, where friendship, encouragement, and shared experiences continue to connect people across borders. Throughout the October outreach, the continued engagement of the IofC Philippines team, members of the Asia Pacific Coordination Group (APCG), and friends of IofC International supported strengthen this journey. Meaningful change is strengthened when people come together, share what they have learned, and support one another in taking the next steps. These connections also remind us that while each initiative is rooted in its own local context, the aspirations for personal transformation, ethical leadership, and peace are shared across communities.

Looking back on the October outreach, the MoU with MSU-IIT offers an encouraging starting point for the next stage of this journey. It creates opportunities to deepen an existing relationship, develop meaningful programmes, and reach more young people through education, dialogue, and values-based leadership.

Yet, the significance of this milestone lies not only in what has been formalised, but also in what it invites us to continue doing: building trust, listening with openness, and nurturing relationships that make lasting change possible.

An idea shared in early 2024 has gradually grown into a journey of friendship, learning, and collaboration. There is a deep sense of gratitude for the relationships already built, the doors now opening, and the possibilities that lie ahead. The journey continues with hope that, through shared commitment and a willingness to change from within, more individuals and communities will be encouraged to contribute to a more peaceful, compassionate, and responsible world.

“When people come together in the spirit of change, their shared efforts can reach beyond what they imagined.”
